Conserving the past for the future
In January 2020, we were appointed by Jules and Jamie Gibbs as Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers to oversee work to restore the building’s original external appearance and function as a space for entertaining, whilst installing modern interior utilities to meet the expectations of a modern, premium events and wedding venue.
The project included a variety of highly skilled contractors from both Arran and the mainland. Whilst there were significant works to transform the building’s interior into a comfortable space for today’s guests, including the installation of modern kitchen and toilet facilities, much of the project’s focus centred on the repair and conservation of the boathouse’s exterior – in particular its roofing, wood & stone work.
project requirements
DM Roofing were meticulous in their work to restore the boathouse’s magnificent sweeping roof and eaves from a semi-collapsed state to its former glory, whilst the building’s red sandstone external walls, so particular to Arran, is being repaired and repointed.
In addition to the exterior building fabric repairs, local contractor, Marriott Builders has carried out the internal renovation works and external drainage installations including the restoration of the boathouse’s particularly ornate woodwork.
As the works have been carried out during the height of Tier 3 & Tier 4 Covid-19 restrictions, we are delighted with the combined efforts and commitment of the team to bring the Dougarie Boathouse back to its former glory.
