On behalf of Dumfries and Galloway Council, we worked together to deliver a restoration of this iconic building to bring it back to life, whilst preserving it’s renowned heritage.
This Category A listed building in the Stranraer town centre now has a new lease of life that pays respect to its past whilst preserving it for the future.
Since opening, the museum has experienced multiple instances of weather damage, leading to damaged stone and the need for redecoration. With an authentic building design that places the museum at the heart of Stranraer’s history, a large aspect of this project was completing repairs of the intricate stoneworks featured throughout the building.
Strong emphasis was placed on removing historically applied renders that weren’t in keeping with the building’s listed nature – these had caused unforeseen damage to the building fabric below, so removal was our recommended solution.
Various issues were discovered upon commencing on site, including substantial rot damage to roof structures and repairs required to the north block tower spire. This required coordination between the main contractor, rot specialist, design team and client, as well as significant renewals to the sarking, slating and lead renewal.
As the most visible element of the exterior envelope, the tower spire required repairs including an all-new lead roof, full refurbishment of the weathervane and works to circulation ventilation louvres below eaves level.
Now prepped for the future, Stranraer Museum is ready to welcome visitors from near and far, offering a fascinating opportunity to discover Wigtownshire’s history.
